THE ENVIRONMENTAL & WASTE INDABA :"WASTE IS MONEY"
UMzimkhulu Local Municipality took a bold step towards sustainable development by launching 2025 environmental waste indaba which unfolded today (14 May 2025) at uMzimkhulu Esayidi TVET College. This significant event, was supported by the Harry Gwala District Municipality (HGDM), Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment (DFFE).
The event brought together stakeholders to address the pressing challenges of waste management in the district. The Waste Indaba serves as a platform for district and local mayors, municipal managers, and industry experts to exchange ideas, explore cutting-edge waste management strategies, and strengthen collaborative efforts. The District Mayor Cllr. Zamo Nxumalo said he is very pleased and honored to be part of this initiative as it is a first of its kind in the district. He furthermore stated that effective waste management is not just a responsibility; it is a pathway to safeguarding our communities, by generating job opportunities, entrepreneurship and poverty eradication.
As He suggested that the municipality can create a program called" Food for Waste" where rural residents in the Harry Gwala district can have the opportunity to recycle waste to uMzimkhulu Municipality recycle points in exchange for food vouchers.This Waste Indaba will also contributes a great deal by reducing the hazardous climate change, and create awareness of an unsafe environment. The Waste Indaba underscores the district's commitment to sustainable development goals, aligning with both national and global environmental priorities.As the day progresses, the Indaba promised actionable outcomes that will position uMzimkhulu as a leader in waste management innovation in this region.
